A Lesson in Desk Health

Little Goblins - Friday, October 23, 2015

A Saskatchewan teacher has his students standing up for their health.

A few months back we shared a news story from The Vancouver Sun, Don't take a seat: Panel says workers should stand for about 2 hours a day, even with exercise. The article covered the many reasons as to why health care professionals are becoming increasingly concerned with the negative impact that sitting for multiple hours per day is having on office workers. The news piece went on to suggest that contrary to what many people believe, physical activity is unlikely to offset the associated risks of sitting for prolonged periods of time. Fortunately, as health experts discover more and more reasons as to why we shouldn't be sitting for hours on end, the topic of this particular office health risk has been gaining increased visibility. As a result, many office workers and their employers have been seeking to replace standard desks and workstations with versatile, height adjustable tables

While the transition to this more health conscious workstation is commendable, many people who make the switch to a height adjustable or standing desk do so in order to combat an already present health risk. However, if we know that standing for multiple hours throughout our work day is beneficial for us, why aren't we all doing it?

This, we imagine, is the exact question that first-grade Saskatchewan teacher, Justin Sauer, asked himself after he switched to a standing desk to combat his health issues. The result? Mr. Sauer transformed each of his grade one students' desks into standing desks, a change that has been overwhelmingly successful. As he notes in the below video from CBC News, the students love their new standing desks and the parents fully support the transition, as many of the students are more attentive and less restless.
