The Three C's of Conscious Office Design

Little Goblins - Friday, April 24, 2015

Create a successful office environment with conscious design!

Every office has its individual needs. However, no matter what your industry or where you are in the world, there are three common needs that every workplace needs. These are the three C's of a successful office and they can only be fulfilled with conscious design.

Concentration

The first C is for concentration. The majority of space in an office is often dedicated to spaces for concentration. It is critical then to take the time and effort to creating an office space that will nurture concentration and inspire your employees to perform and produce their best work. Although there is a trend for hot-desking, when a task requires deep focus, a little privacy can go a long way. Having separate quiet rooms, booths, dividers or designated quiet areas are essential for getting the job done. Include task lamps for lower ambient lighting and adjustable furniture, like our Sit-Stand Desk, in order to allow for various working positions. Use fabrics or panels that can absorb any noise and keep the space quiet.

Collaboration

Everyone knows that a company cannot run on one person alone. That's why the next very important C stands for collaboration. A successful office will complement its spaces for concentration with spaces for collaboration. This where hot-desking systems, like our Bridges or Evolve benching systems, come to shine. These open systems enable employees to discuss projects and work together to solve industry questions comfortably. It is vital to make your employees feel at ease so they can contribute their best to the team.

Board rooms and designated team meeting rooms are also essential to creating collaborative spaces. Having the right tables and accessories can make all the difference. Tables that allow your team to sit together, such as the Junction table, and work with the right tools can give rise to new ideas. Consider having mobile marker boards and bigger backdrops to allow your employees to pin their ideas to the board.

Contemplation

Lastly, but certainly not the least, the third C represents contemplation. Although an office is designed for work, spaces for taking a break are absolutely necessary. Break time is as essential as work time. Everyone needs to give their mind and body a rest after a session of intense focus and concentration, whether that be on solo work or in collaborative brainstorm sessions. Creating a space where people can rest their eyes from looking at a screen and chat casually is ideal for inspiration and a happy work environment. These spaces can be designed with the idea of home in mind in order to recreate a stress-free zone. Having plants, windows and ambient features like a water wall are a great way to inspire calm. Occasional tables and comfy chairs are perfect for these spaces.
