Does Your Desk Suit Your Work Style?

Little Goblins - Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Discover the best office furniture solutions for three very different styles of work.

If you work in an office, your desk is most likely where you spend the majority of your work day. For this reason, it's important to consider how your desk or workstation may be impacting your productivity. Does it enable you to focus and perform at your best?

Within your office you may have noticed that different people have different work styles, enabling each individual to be more or less productive under various circumstances. While some excel in a high energy atmosphere, others require peace and quiet in order to produce their best work. With that in mind, it's important to optimize your desk or workstation so that it is conducive to your work style.

Below are a few workspace solutions for high energy collaborators, quiet meditative thinkers, and those with combination work styles.

1. For High Energy Collaborators

For individuals that function best when they are able to bounce ideas off of colleagues and harness their collaborative energy, teaming stations with little to no partitions can be a great option.

Our Recommendation: Employees with this type of high energy and collaborative work style can thrive with desking systems such as Evolve Benching Solutions and Bridges 2, as seen below.

2. For Quiet Meditative Thinkers

If employees prefer to work through projects on their own without disruption, more isolated desks that enable solitary, quiet workspaces can be a great solution.

Our Recommendation: Desking systems that offer privacy panels, such as eO, are a good option if you are working with limited space, whereas free standing desks, such as Cube 3, work well for larger areas where desks can be spread out.

3. For Combination Work Styles

Not everyone will fit perfectly into one work style or the other. For employees that sometimes prefer to collaborate but may also need quiet time working alone, there are workstations that can accommodate both styles.

Our Recommendation: In this case, desking systems that are flexible and versatile can help employees make the most of their workspace. Visit our past blog post on versatile workstations for more details.

Versatile Workstations

Little Goblins - Sunday, February 21, 2016

The ideal solution for a collaborative and productive office environment.

Enable your employees to thrive with flexible workstations that can adapt to the work style of each employee.

Within corporate business offices, it is fairly well known that not everyone will perform their best under the same circumstances. One employee may require a lot of stimulation and collaborative energy from their coworkers, while another may need zero noise and the opportunity to work things out in a quiet space. In a time when open concept, bullpen office spaces are the norm, what is the optimal way to address the work style and needs of each of your employees in order to allow them to thrive? Our team at Impact Office has a few great solutions for you.

Teaming Stations: Simple yet effective. Our Teaming Stations provide an open concept look and feel so that employees feel comfortable working together and collaborating, but with panels that allow individuals to have a personal workspace that feels private.

Workscape: These open concept desks allow for high energy collaboration while also offering privacy with versatile partitions for each desk.

Evolve: The Evolve workstations offer private workspaces but with an open vibe and feel, making it easy to collaborate with coworkers. It is also extremely flexible, with the option of adding on and making changes later.

Huddle: Huddle tables easily configure to assist with whatever your current need may be. In search of a large table for a big group meeting? No problem. Looking for a smaller table for two or three? Huddle can be set up to make that happen. How about an individual desk for solitary work? Huddle can take care of that too. For examples, view photos of various Huddle table configurations.

If you have concerns that these workstations may not offer enough privacy for your more introverted employees, our suggestion would be to provide a separate, quiet space within the office that employees can utilize. Learn more about How to Create a Balanced Workplace

The holiday season is a time of giving and showing appreciation for the many people in our lives. While your thoughts may immediately go towards your friends and family at this time of year, we shouldn't forget about those loyal employees and coworkers that we spend so much of our time working alongside. These are the folks that stay late with you to meet that deadline or skip lunch in order to have that report on your desk by the end of the day. It goes without saying that these people definitely deserve a little holiday generosity and cheer.

Show your appreciation for your employees this holiday season with the gift of an office furniture overhaul. Replace old, neglected office furniture that is most likely detracting from staff focus and productivity, and is definitely not good for anyone's posture. Not sure where to start? We've got you covered. Below is our holiday gift guide, suitable for any office space that is in need of some health-inspired holiday love.

From head to toe, give your employees' workstations an ergonomic makeover!

  • Head: Set monitors to the ideal height for each employee with an adjustable monitor arm, such as the HDL Single Monitor Arm, to help prevent everything from neck strain to headaches.
  • Upper Body: Adding a keyboard tray to a workstation prevents office workers from hunching over their keyboard and allows them to reap the full benefits offered by ergonomic chairs.
  • Back: An ergonomic office chair, such as the ObusForme Executive, offers lumbar support and contour seating that will align the user's back into a healthy posture and relieve any back strain.
  • Lower Body: Avoid the health issues that are associated with sitting for excessive periods of time by replacing your workstations with Electric Sit Stand Tables, allowing easy transitions from working at a traditional sitting desk to a standing desk with just the push of a button. These convenient adjustable tables are great for the health of not only the user's lower body, but also their heart health and more.
  • Toe: Take advantage of the multitude of health benefits offered by a foot machine, which encourages gentle movement of the feet while working, and can prevent health issues such as varicose veins.

A Lesson in Desk Health

Little Goblins - Friday, October 23, 2015

A Saskatchewan teacher has his students standing up for their health.

A few months back we shared a news story from The Vancouver Sun, Don't take a seat: Panel says workers should stand for about 2 hours a day, even with exercise. The article covered the many reasons as to why health care professionals are becoming increasingly concerned with the negative impact that sitting for multiple hours per day is having on office workers. The news piece went on to suggest that contrary to what many people believe, physical activity is unlikely to offset the associated risks of sitting for prolonged periods of time. Fortunately, as health experts discover more and more reasons as to why we shouldn't be sitting for hours on end, the topic of this particular office health risk has been gaining increased visibility. As a result, many office workers and their employers have been seeking to replace standard desks and workstations with versatile, height adjustable tables

While the transition to this more health conscious workstation is commendable, many people who make the switch to a height adjustable or standing desk do so in order to combat an already present health risk. However, if we know that standing for multiple hours throughout our work day is beneficial for us, why aren't we all doing it?

This, we imagine, is the exact question that first-grade Saskatchewan teacher, Justin Sauer, asked himself after he switched to a standing desk to combat his health issues. The result? Mr. Sauer transformed each of his grade one students' desks into standing desks, a change that has been overwhelmingly successful. As he notes in the below video from CBC News, the students love their new standing desks and the parents fully support the transition, as many of the students are more attentive and less restless.

5 Tips to Restore Office Productivity

Little Goblins - Friday, August 21, 2015

Five problems that may be contributing to a lower output of office productivity and the solutions that will help you solve them.

In the majority of offices across the world there are often many distractions that prevent employees from producing work at an optimal level. These distractions can range from mild problems to larger issues; everything from poor lighting at a person's desk, to severe bodily discomfort that an employee may be experiencing due to their workstation, can prevent a person from being their most productive self.

Below, you will find some of the most common problems office workers experience that often contribute to a lack of productivity, along with the simple solutions that can help you fix them. By implementing the below solutions, with any luck, your office should be producing its best work in no time!

PROBLEM #1:

Clutter and a lack of space can be a major distraction and contribute to a slower output of work.

SOLUTION #1:

Try clearing and organizing your desk first. If you find that there is still not enough space to lay out your daily work, consider upgrading your office's desks and cubicles to workstations and/or systems that have been designed for optimal workflow and ease of use.

PROBLEM #2:

Tired eyes caused by bad lighting.

SOLUTION #2:

If you have the ability to move your desk in your office, position your table by the window to take advantage of the natural light. If moving towards a window is not an option, or you find that you require more light, a correctly positioned desk lamp with a bright bulb is sure to help shine a light on this issue. (Pun intended!)

PROBLEM #3:

Have you noticed that you or your employees have issues sitting still throughout the work day? Many of us that work in an office environment feel the need to get up from our desks to escape the monotony of being seated for eight or more hours every day. What's more, office workers are now being encouraged to take breaks from sitting and stretch throughout the day for health reasons.

SOLUTION #3:

Height adjustable desks allow office workers the freedom to continue to work while standing, while also enabling the user to sit back down again, should they get tired of being on their feet.

PROBLEM #4:

Bodily aches and pains that result from poorly set up workstations, including neck, back and wrist pain.

SOLUTION #4:

Proper ergonomic solutions that address poor seating and workstation set ups. Solutions can range from ergonomic chairs, to keyboard trays and foot rests, to monitor arms that can be positioned to hold a monitor at the ideal height, distance and slant for each person.

PROBLEM #5:

Office paper work inefficiencies that lead to the same work being done more than once.

SOLUTION #5:

A proper filing system can prevent oversights in communication and multiple employees from completing the same work.

Coworking: A New Way to Work

Little Goblins - Thursday, March 26, 2015

Shared office spaces are becoming a popular option for entrepreneurs and small companies.

Shared office space is hardly a new idea. Traditionally, however, open concept, communal workstations have generally been in the form of cubicles and large work tables. They are spaces that are shared by employees, all of whom work for the same company, a company that typically owns the entire building or floor. These communal spaces are meant to increase workflow, creativity, and collaboration between coworkers all within the same corporation. Now, although these collaborative workstations still exist within most companies, "shared workspace" is taking on a whole new meaning. And, some might say, it's about time.

With the 50th anniversary of the cubicle occurring last year, a refreshed way to think about one's workspace is definitely needed. Coworking, an idea that has been gaining momentum over the past decade, enables entrepreneurs, small companies, and/or travelling business people to share a workspace with other people who are not affiliated with their company or work. It is a convenient, and much more affordable, way to rent out office space in the city. Most shared coworking spaces also offer renters access to boardrooms, kitchens and other facilities associated with traditional office spaces.

With such a large population of entrepreneurs in Vancouver, coworking is a great option to consider as an office space. Watch the below video to gain a better understanding of this emerging trend.

We know that shared workspaces need office furniture too. Should you require assistance in furnishing an office space for coworking purposes, we can help! Our team would be happy to help you find the best office furniture solutions for your office space.

Tips For Creating Better Office Organization & Storage

Get an office that works with you, not against you!

Is your office not supporting all your current filing and storage needs? Does it feel like you have papers and documents everywhere with little space to work? There are many small changes that you can make to your office to improve the functionality of it to make your working day easier.

Filing: it is extremely important to have the right filing needs for employees based on their job role. Different departments and positions can have extremely different filing methods and amounts. Lateral Filing from 2 drawers to 5 drawers can keep papers organization making them easier to find and improving efficiency.

Desk Savers: are anything that can help save usable space on your desk. Monitor Arms are a great way to free up space by moving your computer monitor above the desk freeing up all that room below, plus it is more ergonomically friendly. Keyboard trays do the exact same thing by moving the keyboard off the desk creating more usable space.

CPU Holders: will hold your computer dock in a movable container so your can move it around to fit your seating and storage needs of your offices.

If your finding that your current workspace is completely inefficient and not working it may be time to look at a new workstation with built in hutches, filing, and storage solutions. Evolve, Bridges II, and Voi are all new modern looking workstations that have built in filing and storage needs without taking up a huge amount of space, this could be a great option for old cubicles and offices that are not working for current employees.

Any change big or small to change how employees work in a positive way is a great investment and can increase moral and employee efficiency. If you need better office organization come down to our Vancouver showroom where our sales staff can help solve all your storage and filing needs.
