5 easy tips on how to create a healthier office environment - right at your desk!

Many of us spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week working in some sort of office environment. Whether that may be your home office, a cubicle in the bull pen, or your own private office, more often than not we are all sitting at a desk for the majority of those business days.

Within the last couple of years, several studies (and some terrifying infographics, such as Sitting is Killing You) have come to our attention. So, what can be done? Unfortunately, most of us do not have the pleasure of just up and quitting our jobs; meaning that other solutions to support our health must be utilized. Below, we explore tips on how you can stay healthy at the office.

5 Tips to Support Office Health:
  1. Stretch: Whether you just get up and go for a 2 minute stroll down the hall to get a glass of water, or you literally do some stretching beside your desk, it's important just to get up and move your muscles. Great stretches to keep in mind are neck, back, arm and leg stretches.

  2. Go ergonomic: Ergonomic office furniture supports

adjustable heights, tilt positions, lumbar support and more, all of which help prevent unnecessary discomfort and injury at the office. Don't believe us? Check out this infographic: 10 Reason Why You Need Office Ergonomics.

  3. Try standing: People who have opted to stand at their desk to do work, rather than sit, have seen discomfort decrease an average of 64 percent and the occurrence of injuries and illnesses decrease by more than half. It has also been noted that employees take shorter and fewer breaks when using sit to stand desks. If you're not quite ready to take the plunge, try the Sit Stand adjustable desk that can be moved up and down depending on your preference on any given day.

  4. Walk or bike: Try biking to work or, if you work close enough, walk. If your commute is too far to walk or bike, you can always try a combination of public transit and walking or biking. We're proud that many of our employees bike to work for both environmental and health reasons!

  5. Support your feet: Inactive sitting can result in health related issues such as blood clots, varicose veins and pressure on the Achilles tendon due to pooling of fluids in the lower limbs. Foot accessories can promote a gentle rocking movement which utilizes the muscles in the lower legs, increasing circulation.
