Sit Stand Desks a Review

Jodi Young - Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Why Sit Stand Desks are the Real Deal

Over the last year you have probably been hearing more and more about sit stand or electric height adjustable desks and how they are changing the work world for better or worse. Many people don’t know why they are such a revolution and if they actually work. In this blog post we review what everyone has been telling us about sit stands from testing one in our showroom.

Research says that alternating between sitting and standing benefits both your work and your productivity. Why is this? This is because sitting all day is in fact bad for you, if you have had a job where you sit for long periods of time then you know what I am talking about. Its uncomfortable, it hurts your back, your butt, your legs, and places you never thought it would hurt like your wrists, your neck, and your shoulders. Our bodies are not meant to sit all day and after many days of sitting for long periods of time you will notice muscle aches and pains that become a daily occurrence. Alternating between sitting and standing throughout your day allows your muscles to flex and the blood to flow better throughout your body rather than pooling while sitting. Standing greatly decreases the strain on your muscles so there is less fidgeting or moving around to get comfortable and an increase of energy.

It does take a little while to get used to a sit-stand desk, after sitting and typing for so long you have to adjust and get used to completing tasks while standing up. We found that since a person was already standing they were more prone to going and getting things and walking around the office to communicate with co-workers. After a few weeks people noticed increased energy, better focus, and actual weight loss in some cases! It’s not just a fad, standing at work can change many aspects of your life for the better! We think it’s a great investment for offices because people of many different heights can use these desks, just push a button to your needed size and voila! It’s time people start investing in their quality of life at work, make employees happy and healthier by giving them the opportunity to stand at work!

Tips & Tricks to Get the Best Reception Area for Your Office!

The reception is the point of entry for all people coming into your office, it is the first impression they get of your company before any interaction. It is important to make your reception area a reflection of your company but also keep it warm and inviting. Since your receptionist is first person to interact with anyone entering your office, make sure they have the space that they need to work effectively and are comfortable in.

Here are some pointers to getting the best reception area possible:

  • Make sure the reception desk is sleek in design and aesthetically appealing
  • Measure the room and make sure the reception desk isn’t too big or too small for the space
  • Make sure the people working reception have enough workspace and storage to complete all tasks easily and effectively, also more storage allows for less clutter and papers out in the open
  • If your receptionist works with sensitive or confidential information, like in a doctor’s office, make sure the desk rises up to about neck level allowing people to still see them but not see the files they are working with
  • Your receptionist will be at their desk for the majority of the day, make sure they have an ergonomic chair and accessories to keep them focused and comfortable
  • Make sure lounge seating is comfortable and inviting
  • Make sure all reception seating suits your cleaning needs, leather and vinyl are a lot easier to clean than fabric upholstery
  • Add anything to increase your visitors experience such as magazines, candles, TVs, or a coffee station

Receptions are the time to make a statement and use bright colours with interesting designs, have fun with this space!

Are You Making These Ergonomics Mistakes?

Jodi Young - Tuesday, October 07, 2014

5 Common Ergonomic Mistakes

October is National Ergonomic Month! So we are going through the cardinal sins that many people make in regards to ergonomics, or a lack there of. Here are five common mistakes people make in the workplace that affect their health and quality of life and the various ways to fix them.

1. Not Having a Proper Chair

It doesn`t matter whether your chair is truly ergonomic, although that does help, having a proper chair means having a chair that is suited to your daily tasks and body type. You should be able to make adjustments to you chair to increase comfortability and make sure you are supported in key areas such as your back, your legs, and your neck. You should have lumbar support for your lower back and the ability to position your chair so your feet are firmly planted on the ground. There are numerous ergonomic features on many chairs, make sure you have the one that fits you.

2. You Look Down On Your Monitor Screen

You might think that where your monitor is placed doesn’t affect your body, but it truly does. Looking down at your screen can scrunch your shoulders and cause pain in your neck. Your monitor should always be an arm’s length away and the top of the screen should be at your eye level when you are sitting. This will allow you to scan the screen without making head movements causing discomfort. Don’t put the screen too high because you can crane or pinch your neck. The best way to raise your monitor screen is to get a monitor arm. They are not extremely costly and can make a huge difference in your work day.

3.Your keyboard is on your desk.

Having your keyboard on top of your desk can make it so you shrug your shoulders and bend your wrists when typing. This can cause discomfort and carpel tunnel syndrome in the future. Make sure you have palm support near your keyboard to rest your hands without bending your wrists. The best solution is getting an ergonomic keyboard tray installed under your desk within your natural reach zone. This will allow your shoulders to drop and your wrist to remain straight.

4. You Have Improper Lighting:

Appropriate lighting at work can reduce eye fatigue and headaches, the ability to see well at work is crucial make sure you have the right lighting. Ask yourself these questions when in your workplace. Is there enough light for the task at hand? Is there glare from your computer screen from light? Are shadows eliminated? Do the lights provide stead illumination? (Make sure they don’t flicker) DO you complain of headaches or eye strain? Depending on your answers to these questions it may be time to re-evaluate the lighting in your office.

5. You Sit for a Large Portion of your Day

We understand that desk jobs require long periods of sitting and concentrating. However this doesn’t mean you should be sitting all day, and if you are it is a great dis-service to your health. Studies say you should be getting up each hour for 5-15 minutes to stretch out your legs and get the blood flowing. Set reminders and make sure you are getting up throughout your day, even a small walk around the office or a chat to a co-worker will help prevent aches and pains. And for an even better solution try a sit-stand desk where you can go from sitting to standing quickly and continue your work!

Improve Employee's Productivity With a Few Simple Ideas & Products

In today’s work place there can be so many distractions, it can be hard for employees to focus and be as productive as possible. That’s why it is important for employers to create a space that allows employees to focus on their work and not on other issues.

Getting the right products that will aid their functions is key, here are a few tips that can improve your employees functionality and productivity at work.

Proper Filing:is key to many workers. Being able to find the documents they need in a timely and organized manner can make a huge difference. Wasting time looking for files can be frustrating and discouraging, get the right amount of filing storage needed and create a system that makes finding documents straight forward.

Sit Stand Desks: many employees spend a lot of their time shifting to comfortable positions while sitting down, or walking around and stretching to try and rid their bodies of pain and discomfort from sitting in their office chairs all day. Studies show that when employees stand, they have less pain and discomfort and can focus for longer periods of time therefore having better output in their work.

Proper Ergonomics: if a sit stand is out of the question, having the proper ergonomic accessories for your employees is extremely important. Monitor arms, proper seating, and keyboard trays should be used to prevent the harmful impact on their bodies as  much as possible. Working while you’re in pain or uncomfortable is never fun.

Environment: creating an overall positive and comfortable environment is important for employees. People do their best work in an environment that is suitable to their needs and appealing in aesthetic. Small changes can make a big difference, give employees a space that allows them to relax, sparks their creativity, or allows them to focus without interruptions.

How to Get a Modern Look For Your Office

Modern Office Furniture That is Practical and Efficient for Workspaces

Today companies are designing their offices with a clean modern aesthetic. Gone are the days of big workstations and chunky boardroom tables, taking their place is white furniture, metal finishes, and cool colour accents. But when does modern become too modern? When does design and aesthetic take away from practicality and efficiency? After all companies are looking for longevity out of their investment in office furniture.

Here are some product tips to give your office that  Modern feel without sacrificing key components of your office furniture.

Workstations: Today every office furniture company is making workstations that are still extremely functional, but they look very different from the traditional three walled cubicle. Voi is a modern looking workstation that can be configured in many different ways with numerous colour, laminate, and finish options.

Seating: A bulky leather office chair while comfortable, is not very modern. A thin white chair that is more comfortable with built in lumbar support and other ergonomic features, now that is modern. The G20 chair looks great but also is one of the best ergonomic chairs on the market.

Boardroom: Our Bridges boardroom table is practical with a very cool aesthetic, the metal legs and bases stand out and look great with a dark wood finish or a white top.

Reception Seating: Guest seating is a great way to add some personality and design to your office. Since many people aren’t sitting for long periods of time it does not have to be as ergonomic as other office furniture. Flock, for example, has a modern look and comes in endless configurations and colours to show your personality to customers and clients.

Getting a modern looking office without sacrificing effective office furniture can be easy. It can reflect the personality of your business and employees, also who wouldn’t love to work in a modern and inspiring place? Spring Cleaning for Your Office Space

6 Tips for Spring Cleaning and Desk Organization

The warmer weather has arrived indicating that spring is finally here! Many people choose spring as the season to clean out the cobwebs at home and do a little cleaning. Well, just like at home, it's time for some spring cleaning at the office.

Spring cleaning is a great reason to organize your desk and reevaluate your office space. Below, we've compiled some of our favourite cleaning and organizational tips for the office in order to help you step into spring with a work space that feels fresh, efficient and, above all else, clean!

6 Tips for Spring (Desk!) Cleaning:

  1. Evaluate your desk or workstation: While you can choose to tackle spring cleaning in any matter that you wish, we recommend starting big, then narrowing down to the smaller stuff. Start with your desk as a whole. Does it need an upgrade? Could you benefit from a more organized cubicle system or desk? There's no point organizing all of your drawers and papers if you plan on getting a new desk in the near future.
  2. Upgrade your desk accessories: Consider adding a filing system to your workstation, or ergonomic accessories, such as an adjustable monitor arm, a foot rest or a keyboard tray. Ergonomic accessories relieve unnecessary tension throughout your body, allowing you to work pain free, with fewer interruptions, and be more productive at your work space.
  3. Clear your desk: If you have a cluttered desk, chances are that you also have a clutter headspace when you sit down to do your work. Keep a photo or two, or hang what you can on the walls, but leave you desk as clear as possible and free for you to do your work. Put nicknacks in drawers or take them home. Other options for making space include using a monitor arm to raise your monitor off of your desk, or a keyboard tray to keep your desk clear.
  4. Recycle what you do not need: Go through any stacks of papers that you may have lying around and sort them into two piles. Those you do not need, which you can recycle, and those you do need.
  5. File what you do need: File the papers you do need in a way that makes sense to you so that you feel more organized regarding your work, and are able to efficiently find documents when you need them.
  6. For Future - Think before you print: For future documents, make a conscious decision to evaluate whether hardcopies are necessary. Sometime you will need to print a document, however, often, we print things out of habit. Having less hardcopies will keep your desk clutter-free and the environment happy!

Should you have any questions regarding any of the above tips or products, please do not hesitate to contact our team at Impact Office. Happy spring cleaning!

Make the Most of Your Office in 2014

Little Goblins - Monday, January 20, 2014

It’s a new year and what better time than to revamp your office and create a healthy, productive and Eco-conscious space?!

With just a few tweaks to your office design, you can accomplish all these things and Impact Office has got everything you need! Let’s begin with…

Healthy

A healthy employee is a happier, more productive employee. Design your office to include ergonomic seating in order to avoid repetitive strain injuries and workers on sick leave. Of course, some employees are more sensitive to sitting for eight hours of the day no matter how complex their seating is. Our electric sit-stand desks (featured in last month’s blog post) are ideal to allow your employees to work comfortably, whether they are seated or standing or whatever is in between!

Seating and desks are not the only office accessories that can keep your employees healthy though. Monitor arms are the ideal accessories to allow one to adjust the screens to the perfect alignment according to any individual’s needs. Foot rests are ideal for relieving back pressure and our foot machines can help employees maintain good circulation by encouraging movement and massaging the feet!

Productive

How can furniture make an office more productive? The secret is in the style and arrangement of designated spaces. Sleek modern desk systems such as the Evolve Benching Solutions or Bridges 2 allow for employees to work closely together and encourage collaboration, while still giving workers personal spaces to get work done without distraction. Vice Versa Bridges is another design that can help keep teams close together and maximize space in the office.

If you’re office doesn’t already have designated lounge areas, then perhaps space conscious desk systems will help make room. Lounge chairs and coffee tables are a great addition to the office, not just for customers and guests but also for your employees.

Eco-Conscious

If you want to reduce your impact on the environment, there are three R’s that every one should aim to live by: reduce, reuse and recycle! Impact Office may not able to help you implement recycling programs or digital IT projects to leave paper behind but we can offer you a selection of pre-owned furniture!

Lastly, and this is the only product we don’t have, add greenery to your office with plants! Plants can help clean the air, bring nature indoors and create a relaxed atmosphere where your employees can thrive. Make 2014 the year your office design contributes to your business magic!

Design Matters: Creating the Ideal Office Space

Little Goblins - Thursday, September 12, 2013

Make the office a place your employees want to come to everyday and watch your company's success grow!

Office design. We can tell you as unbiased as an office furniture company can, that office design matters. When you spend a minimum of 40 hours a week in one place you have got to love it.

“After all, we spend the same amount of time if not longer in our work spaces than in our homes, so why not feel cosy and bring some personality to the space we spend most of our time in?" says interior designer Ivan Meade.

So where do you begin? If you can’t work from home or have your staff working from home, inspire their creativity and help them love their workspace by making it a place they want to be. Approach your office design like you would a home.

Here are our top tips to creating the space your employees will love and that won’t hurt the pocket books:

  • Everyone has his or her own personal style. Find a unifying element and economize with a versatile desking system such as the Voi by Hon. This will allow you to set up a stylish, neutral base to build upon.
  • Create an in-office escape for your employees. Create a space with comfy lounge chairs and occasional tables where people can relax on their breaks or maybe even do some work!
  • Think subtly ergonomic. A desirable work place will not put employees at risk of repetitive strain injuries. Incorporate elements in each workstation that will keep your employees safe without compromising aesthetics with pieces like the Freedom Chair or a keyboard tray.
  • A neat, de-cluttered office is a productive office. Place monitor arms at workstations to create desk space for your staff. Mimic homey bookshelves and storage solutions to keep the office organized and visually relaxed.
  • Lastly, accessorize. Use area rugs and accent pillows in lounge areas and place artwork on the walls that will inspire. Incorporate different types of lighting to create ambience and avoid the too-bright, common fluorescent bulb. Use plants to bring nature indoors.

Whether it’s beautifully and functionally designed or not, the office is a home away from home. If you make it feel inviting and design like you would a living space rather than a grey cubicle city, you’ll have created a win-win situation for the company. Your employees will want to come to work and productivity will increase.

Check out our products for more stylish and ergonomic design solutions and let us help you build the perfect office home.
